Treatment Options

If we determine that you have gum disease, we may recommend one or more of the following therapies. We will always utilize the least invasive techniques possible and move toward more advanced modalities as needed. If you experience dental anxiety or feel nervous before a procedure, our sedation dentistry options can help you feel calmer and more comfortable. Our gum disease treatments include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Laser Scaling and Root Planing
  • Pocket Reduction

Antibiotics

Gum disease is an infection caused by bacteria, so we can utilize antibiotics to kill these microbes and treat the disease. When possible, we will apply the antibiotics directly to the infected areas for precise, concentrated treatment. As a result, you won’t have to take an oral antibiotic medication that could affect your entire system.

“I went to Smile by Design for two different treatments in the last two months. They welcomed me with the greatest warmth and made me feel that I was in good hands. The entire team is amazing! I highly recommend it.”

Laser Scaling and Root Planing

Root planing and scaling is one of the most common and effective ways to address gum disease. This process involves cleaning the gums and teeth deep down to the root. When combined with laser dentistry , this approach can achieve more comprehensive results. Additionally, antibiotics may be used to further combat bacterial infections. Laser treatment can provide a more comfortable experience than the traditional procedure, but it’s not appropriate for every person. We will determine if this method is right for your needs and goals during your initial consultation.

Pocket Reduction

Advanced gum disease can result in bone loss, which can create deeper “pockets” in the gum line that make directly applying antibiotics difficult or impossible. In cases of significant bone loss, laser treatment will be excluded as an option. A minimally invasive surgical procedure, called pocket reduction, can be performed in our office to remove infected tissue and smooth the roots of the affected teeth. After the operation, your gum tissue should heal securely to the teeth, eliminating the pocket. Dr. Shen utilizes leading techniques to make this process as comfortable as possible.

If your periodontal concerns are more cosmetic than functional in nature, we also offer gummy smile treatment, which can improve the appearance of your smile.
